Clothing and accessories as art

As modern people, we have long moved passed clothes as just a functional thing. We dress creatively often expressing our personality through our clothing. Fashion is also one of the world's most marketable art.

Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia

I recently visited the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia in Atlanta. It is a small museum with art made only by Georgians. Students can get in for just a dollar. Much of the art relates to Georgia's culture and its environment. Others are abstract. Below are a few of the works I liked. The bottom right was made using a computer.

Food as Art

Making food is art. Many of the things we eat are made the way they are not just for functional purposes but also for aesthetic purposes. A aesthetic looking food is much more likely to be eaten than a non-aesthetic food. In fact, restaurants thrive off making their food artistic and appealing.

Technology and Art

As more and more operating systems are released, for example Windows 7, Google Android, Linux, Mac Leopard X, etc, the artistic look of these operating systems are getting better and better. An artistic user interface definitely appeals to consumers and is a must to be successful.

Dance!

Dancing is a form of art as it involves creative expression using the body as a medium. The different kinds of dance reflect the thinking and style of the people. For example, ballet is smooth and graceful, while hip-hop is somewhat more free and random.  Salsa is a more intimate dance and reflects Hispanic culture. These are just a few of the many kinds of dance.

Advertisements

A lot of thought and creativity goes into advertisement which is why advertisements are a form of public art. They are artistic in order to grab the attention of consumers and relay something to them, just as a painting is made to catch the attention of a viewer and relay the thoughts of the artist. Above is an advertisement for a medicine.

Movies and Art

I knew movies were art, but just didn't think of writing a post on it. So here I am. I recently saw Harry Potter. It is a very artistic movie in that has special effects, a fantastical theme, and much more. The books were very moving and this movie captivated the audience.

Interior Decoration

At one of my friend's apartments in Atlantic Station, I realized that interior decoration had a huge impact on the view of a home. It is art that can be appreciated everyday. It can set a mood. A fancy interior will make one feel everything is luxurious. While a modern interior gives off a contemporary and luxurious feeling.

Video Games and Art

Video games are becoming more and more advanced. Trees look more real, realistic water splashes and has waves, the sun will cast shadows, grass sways when the wind blows in its direction or by a airplane zooming though. Explosions look very realistic. Buildings can be viewed in intricate detail. People, cars, the environment, the weapons, and everything else looks so real that one forgets he is playing a game.  I play mainly first person shooters which are full of what I just described above. The graphics in games have become so advanced that it takes much more than the average desktop/ laptop to run the game.In fact video game designing takes a lot of background knowledge in art.

Artistic Cars

One would argue that all cars are artistic, however once a car becomes popular and is well sold, it loses much of its artistic appeal simply because the style has saturated the market. Its the same thing with songs. Art is much more appreciated when it is unique. And so, as Adriel from our class said, I also  believe each car is a clean slate on which you can draw whatever you want. Car modifications are very popular here and all over the world. I was inspired to write this post because I saw Fast and the Furiuos (2001) a few days ago. Body kits, paint jobs,  wheels, spoilers, etc are all things one can add to their car to set it apart from other cars.

Dreamweaver

I've always wondered how to design complex websites and was very happy to learn. It was hard though, and I definitely need more practice, but I'm happy that some of the questions in my mind are now demystified . Before going to the dremweaver session, I didn't even know that a program such as deamweaver existed. I used to use Yahoo GeoCities as a kid, but this is much much more complex.

Guerrilla Girls

The Guerrilla Girls were very interesting to learn about. I also felt that art by women isn't displayed, sold, or appreciated as much as art by men is. In fact, of all the times I have been to the High Museum, I have rarely seen any art by women displayed. I'm sure there is some, but it takes time to find compared to the art by men. My personal belief is that sexism should be prevented not just by private organizations but also through stringent laws.

I Will Miss Autumn

Now that Autumn is over and winter is here, the different colored leaves will be gone soon. I really feel the orange, yellow, and red leaves enhance and beautify the surroundings. Its natural art in my opinion. Whether I'm at Tech, at my apartment, or even driving around, the leaves and the cooler temperatures evoke a nice pleasant feeling.

The Titian Exhibit

Two weeks ago, I visited the Titian Exhibit at the High Museum with a few friends. I thought I would see lots of paintings of ancient buildings, castles, kings, queens, and the such. The exhibit focused more on mythological goddesses, nymphs, etc. There were also lots of nude paintings.  The exhibit gave off an aura of grandness and richness. The wall colors, lighting, and golden frames added to the flamboyance.

Working on my visual essay

Putting together my visual essay was actually fun and I got to be reminiscent of old memories. I used pictures from vacations with my family as I found lots of examples of public art in them. Pictures I used were from Las Vegas, Helen Georgia, and some pictures from right here in Atlanta. Public art is often culturally significant or culturally themed. Public art in Las Vegas and Helen is more culturally themed, while I found the public art in Atlanta to be more culturally significant (actually related to those specific ethnic people here)  e.g. the Arch de Triumph and Swaminarayan Temple.

Pumpkin Carving

Pumpkin carving is a form of art. I love to make face, designs, etc on the pumpkin and then see how the light protrudes through the carving at night. Below are some carving designs I liked:

Computer Case Art

I have a hobby of assembling pcs and keeping up with the latest hardware, etc. I realized there is art to pc making too. The cases you can buy (or make) and the lighting are all very artistic. I made a desktop back in 10th grade which is pictured above. While it is no where near state of the art now, it still looks cool and is pretty fast.  Below are also some pics of computers cases:

Atlantic Station

For finding public art, I thought it would be a good idea to go to Atlantic Station. While I knew what I was going to take pictures of, it was relatively hard because I was driving at the same time due to time constraints. Below are some pictures I took:

My photographs

In class today we talked about photography as a kind of art. I personally love photography. I love taking pictures of nature in particular. I would love to have a DSLR camera, but they're quite expensive (starting from $500).  Below are some photos I took. Click to make bigger...

Witty and Funny Art

I love stand-up comedy (good ones) and Demetri Martin is one of my favorite comedians. I was watching one of his shows and he showed some of the art he had drawn. I found his art very witty and humorous.

August Burns Red

I heard of a new band called August Burns Red and even though I don't like scream o music, the lyrics of this song are very good and the instrumentals are amazing. The lyrics are very insightful and have lots of depth. This is the kind of art I like. One particular line reads, "You're hurt, you're broken. That's all right. This might be what it takes to wake you up." Art  tries to reveal a perception of the artist. These lyrics do the same. Theses lyrics reveal a unique perspective of life that I find very original and feasible.

Trip to the High Museum : European Design

Last Sunday I went to the High Museum of Art and saw the exhibition on European art.
Among my favorites were

1) Nuvola Hanging Light
This cloud shaped light really got my attention. It moves around and squirms as if something is inside it moving around. The Nuvola lets off a soft white light thats not too bright, but that is just right.

2) You Can't Lay Down Your Memory Chest of Drawers

This chest is a bunch of drawers bundled together with a belt. It is suprisingly stable. I just thought it was very original and also amusing.  A weird fact about this chest is that it was designed in 1991, but made 17 years later in 2008.

There were many other works I liked, but these two were my most favorite.

Art

Art, according to me, has thousands of forms and doesn't have to be attractive or beautiful. However,  I believe this particular picture is an attractive piece of art. It is soothing and pleasant to the eye. Art depicting natural scenes such as this one always strikes me as beautiful art. I enjoy looking at the range and transition of colors. The rising sun, mountains, the waves of water, and the rocks on the shore are all aesthetically pleasing and bring a person closer to nature.
